Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal — Young medical doctor and community activist Dr Nompumelelo Nkosi-Ntombela, popularly known as Dr Lelo, is turning her passion for empowering communities into a powerful fight against gender-based violence (GBV).

A qualified medical doctor and officially licensed boxing promoter in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Lelo is using Dr Nompumelelo Boxing Promotions to create opportunities for young people while giving women a stronger voice through sport.

Her upcoming debut boxing tournament, scheduled for 5 September 2026 at Sibusisiwe Hall in Mandeni, will place female fighters at the Centre of the main bouts. The event aims to use boxing to send a strong message against GBV while showcasing talented fighters from the community.

For Dr Lelo, the boxing ring represents more than competition. It is a space where women can demonstrate strength, courage and resilience, while young people are given an opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Her vision is to build a stronger sporting culture in Mandeni and use boxing as a tool for social change.

“My dream is to use sport to empower people, create opportunities and fight the social challenges affecting our communities,” is the message behind her work.

From saving lives as a doctor to empowering lives through boxing, Dr Lelo is proving that being a fighter is not only about what happens inside the ring — it is also about standing up for those who need a voice.
