Community members gathered outside the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to stand in solidarity with the family of 24-year-old Karabo Taje, whose alleged murder has sparked renewed calls for justice and an end to gender-based violence (GBV).
Residents, local organisations, and community leaders joined the Taje family, offering comfort and support while calling for accountability as legal proceedings continue.
One community member said the gathering was intended to remind the grieving family that they were not facing the difficult journey alone.
“We came here to support the Taje family during this difficult time. We want them to know that we are with them every step of the way,” the resident said.
Another supporter said the demonstration also served as a united stand against the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence.
“We cannot continue losing women to GBV. We are here to say enough is enough,” the community member said.
Following the court proceedings, the Taje family released a statement expressing gratitude to everyone who had stood by them.
“The support, prayers, and words of encouragement have given us strength during this difficult time. Your presence reminded us that we are not alone in our pursuit of justice for Karabo,” the family said.
The family also thanked organisations and community members who continue to advocate against GBV and appealed for continued prayers and support as the case progresses through the courts.
The gathering coincided with the second court appearance of a 26-year-old man charged with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Karabo Taje, as well as a domestic violence offence.
The accused appeared briefly before the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court, where the matter was postponed to 10 July 2026 for a bail application. No plea has been entered, and the allegations against him have not been tested in court.
