Durban, KwaZulu-Natal – The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal used the Youth Month celebrations in Durban to energise its campaign ahead of the November 2026 Local Government Elections, drawing hundreds of enthusiastic young supporters to the Olive Convention Centre.
The venue was packed beyond capacity as young people turned out in large numbers, with DA KwaZulu-Natal leader Sthembiso Ngema receiving a rousing welcome from the crowd. Security officials were forced to close the doors once the hall reached its maximum capacity, leaving some party members unable to gain entry.
The impressive turnout underscored the DA’s growing focus on mobilising young voters as political parties intensify their election campaigns across the province. Addressing supporters, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis reflected on the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, urging today’s youth to honour the legacy of those who fought for freedom by actively participating in democracy.
He reminded young South Africans that the courage shown by the youth of 1976 changed the country’s history and challenged the current generation to stand up for justice, opportunity and a better future through civic participation and voting. The event highlighted the increasing importance of young voters in shaping the outcome of the upcoming local government elections.
