BRAZEN AMBUSH OF INTELLIGENCE OFFICERS RAISES QUESTIONS OVER POSSIBLE TARGETED HIT

News

An apparent targeted attack on members of South African Police Service Crime Intelligence in Durban has intensified scrutiny over whether sensitive information or operational assets may have been the motive behind the deadly ambush.Police confirmed that a recently promoted captain was killed, while his colleague, a sergeant, remains in critical condition following the shooting along Flanders Drive.

Witnesses described a coordinated pursuit in which a white Isuzu bakkie chased the officers’ Toyota Hilux for over a kilometre, with multiple gunmen firing from the back. The attack escalated when the Hilux came to a stop and suspects allegedly disembarked, firing directly into the windscreen at close range—suggesting an execution-style assault rather than a random act of violence.

Crucially, eyewitnesses claim the attackers removed a large bag from the police vehicle before fleeing, raising questions about whether the officers were transporting sensitive equipment, intelligence documents, or seized evidence at the time. The getaway vehicle was later found burnt out in KwaMashu, a tactic often used to destroy forensic evidence.

Authorities have labelled the incident an attack on state authority, with investigations now probing whether the ambush was linked to organised crime networks or compromised intelligence operations.
