KwaZulu-Natal will bid farewell this Sunday to legendary actress Cynthia Shange (76), who passed away earlier this week at a Durban hospital.Family spokesperson Lolo Morapeli confirmed that funeral arrangements are underway, with the service expected to be held in the province. She said the ceremony will follow the traditions of the Nazareth Baptist Church, also known as the Shembe Church, of which Shange was a devoted member.
“The family is still finalising the venue, but we can confirm the funeral will take place on Sunday in KwaZulu-Natal,” Morapeli said. Shange, who was born in Lamontville, rose to fame in the 1970s and became the first Black South African woman to represent the country at Miss World in 1972 in London.
She later cemented her place in the entertainment industry with roles in productions such as Shaka Zulu and Muvhango. In recent years, she spoke openly about her battle with diabetes, which led to serious health complications. She is survived by her children, including media personality Nonhle Thema, as well as grandchildren.
