Residents of Inanda have been left disappointed following the cancellation of the area’s popular kasi football tournament, a long-standing community event that has become a vital platform for youth development and local talent scouting.
The tournament, which has grown significantly over the years, typically attracts thousands of spectators, football scouts and aspiring young athletes. However, organisers confirmed that this year’s edition has been called off due to a lack of financial support from both corporate sponsors and government institutions.
The event has played a crucial role in keeping young people engaged during peak holiday periods such as Easter and the festive season. By offering structured recreational activities, the tournament has helped steer youth away from social ills while promoting healthy living and fostering a strong sporting culture within the community.
Beyond entertainment, the games have also served as a development pipeline, with at least seven players progressing to professional ranks in the PSL, including Fezile Gcaba, Luyanda Khumalo, Philane Khumalo, Mangcu Madonsela and Thokozani Khumalo.

Organisers highlighted that the four-day tournament usually features 892 athletes from Inanda and neighbouring townships, with a venue capable of hosting up to 10,000 spectators. It has also contributed to broader community impact, including advocacy efforts that led to the installation of CCTV cameras in parts of Inanda to improve safety during events.
In addition, local media platforms have historically partnered with the tournament, providing coverage and updates that strengthen community ties and visibility.
Community leaders have expressed concern that the cancellation will leave a gap in youth engagement initiatives, urging potential sponsors and government departments to reconsider their support in future.
“This tournament is more than just football—it’s a lifeline for our youth,” said one organiser. “We hope this is not the end, but a temporary setback.”
