Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung is contesting an attempt to seize his assets over an alleged R4.3 million debt linked to a property and petrol station deal dating back more than a decade.

The legal dispute pits Motaung against investment company Pent Up Investments, which has applied to have his estate sequestrated after years of unsuccessful attempts to recover the money. The company claims Motaung failed to honour a settlement agreement reached in 2011 after falling behind on payments related to a R9 million property transaction concluded in 2009.

According to court papers, Pent Up director Costas Couremetis alleges Motaung has lived an extravagant lifestyle while neglecting to settle the long-standing debt.

However, Motaung has dismissed the sequestration application as “drastic” and an abuse of the court process. In an affidavit filed with the Master of the High Court, he argues that ordinary debt-recovery processes should have been pursued instead of insolvency proceedings.

Motaung also disputes the amount claimed, stating that payments made after January 2024 were not properly recorded.

The case could put several of Motaung’s assets — including properties and vehicles — at risk if the court rules in favour of the creditor. The matter remains before the court.
