DURBAN – People living with disabilities gathered in large numbers at the Stable Theatre in Durban for the Nokusa Disability Workshop, an event aimed at promoting inclusion, empowerment, and sustainable opportunities for persons with disabilities.
The packed workshop brought together representatives from several organisations, including Ithala Development Finance Corporation, KZN Growth Fund, Moses Kotane Research Institute, Umunotho Wealth Management, and Dube TradePort. Their representatives shared information on economic opportunities, entrepreneurship, and ways to build more inclusive communities.
South African actor and founder of Nokusa Support for Disabled People, Menzi Nxumalo, used the occasion to donate three wheelchairs to individuals in need as part of Disability Awareness Day activities.
Nxumalo said the workshop was designed to create opportunities and provide education that would enable people living with disabilities to become self-sustainable.
“Our theme is ‘Sukuma Disability and Think Outside the Box’. Disability has been with us for a long time, and the idea is to create opportunities and educate people so they can sustain themselves,” he said.
He also called for more disability awareness campaigns across the country, highlighting the need for greater inclusion in sectors such as media, farming, information technology, and tourism.

One of the event’s inspirational speakers, Zee Zondi, shared her personal journey and encouraged support for the 9th Ulibo Poetry and Honora Awards, scheduled for 4 July 2026. The awards celebrate poets, writers, and creatives while promoting indigenous languages, storytelling, and cultural expression in South Africa.
It provides a platform for both emerging and established artists to showcase their talent, while promoting indigenous languages, storytelling, and cultural expression. The awards also aim to inspire young people and support the growth of the creative industry within local communities.
