INANDA— A large crowd of residents from Inanda and surrounding areas took to the streets in a coordinated march led by Bhinca Nation president Ngizwe Mchunu, calling for action against illegal immigration and the alleged unlawful occupation of spaza shops.
The march began in the Mtshepeni area and proceeded along the M25 Road toward the KwaMashu highway, drawing significant participation from community members. Protesters voiced concerns over the growing number of foreign nationals operating informal businesses, arguing that this has sidelined local entrepreneurs and contributed to economic strain within the township.
Singing and chanting slogans, participants emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of immigration laws and fair regulation of small businesses. Organisers described the march as a mobilisation effort ahead of a larger planned demonstration set to take place in the Durban CBD on Wednesday.
Mchunu addressed the crowd during the march, urging unity among residents and calling for what he described as “economic justice for local people.” He maintained that the protest was aimed at raising awareness and pressuring authorities to respond to long-standing community grievances.
While many attendees expressed support for the initiative, some local leaders have cautioned against actions that could incite violence or target individuals based on nationality.Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the march or the upcoming protest.
The planned demonstration in Durban’s city centre is expected to draw even larger numbers, with organisers promising a peaceful but firm stance on the issues raised.
