LEGENDARY KZN HEADMASTER SIPHO MAGWAZA RETIRES AFTER 38 YEARS OF SERVICE

Retired headmaster Sipho Magwaza is honoured by the KwaMashu community for his decades of transformative leadership at Dr J.L. Dube High School.The KwaMashu community in the INK area has come together to celebrate the remarkable career of veteran educator and headmaster, Mr Sipho Magwaza, who officially retires after 38 years in public service.

Fondly known as “Njinji”, Magwaza leaves behind a legacy of excellence, having led Dr J.L. Dube High School to consistent academic success, including multiple 100% matric pass rates. His leadership extended beyond academics, shaping learners into well-rounded individuals through sport, mentorship and community engagement.

“It has been an honour to serve this community,” said Magwaza. “Education is not just about books, it is about building character and opening doors for future generations.”Colleague and longtime friend, Ms Thandeka Mkhize, described him as “a pillar of strength and wisdom.” She added, “He never led from a distance—he was always present, guiding both teachers and learners with humility.”Former learner Sibusiso Dlamini credited Magwaza for changing his life.

“He believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Today I am a graduate because of his encouragement,” he said.School Governing Body chairperson, Mr Mandla Zulu, highlighted Magwaza’s role in securing major investments, including a R75 million boost from the Cotton On Foundation. “That project transformed not just the school, but the entire community through job creation and development,” Zulu noted.

As tributes continue to pour in, Magwaza’s impact is evident in the countless lives he has touched. His retirement marks the end of an era, but his legacy of integrity, service and visionary leadership will endure for generations.
