KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mntomuhle Khawula, says the ISUKILE Programme is transforming communities by combining service delivery with talent identification across the province.

Speaking at the ISUKILE Eastern Cluster event held at Tobi & Sizakala open space, Khawula described the initiative as a “basket of services” that reaches communities directly. The programme focuses on identifying and nurturing talent in sport, arts and culture, while also providing resources to ensure sustainability.

“In one day, it’s a basket of services in the area,” said Khawula, adding that the department aims to empower communities to continue activities long after the event. He encouraged ongoing participation in aerobics and grassroots development, urging experienced athletes and artists to mentor younger generations.

Participants in the programme benefit from incentives, including cash prizes for football and netball teams, with winners receiving up to R1 000 and additional rewards for runners-up. Teams are also provided with kits, while equipment is left behind to support continued training and development.

Khawula emphasised the department’s commitment to accessible support, stating that funding is available for well-structured community initiatives.

“We are with the people every day, every weekend. If the programme is good, we will support it financially,” he said.

He concluded by noting steady growth in both sport and the creative sector across the province, highlighting ISUKILE as a key driver in unlocking local talent and opportunities in KwaZulu-Natal.
