Learners across KwaZulu-Natal are set to benefit from a major boost in school sport after the handover of table tennis equipment to 25 schools.
KZN MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mntomuhle Khawula, joined Deputy Minister Peace Mabe at Gardenia Primary School in Wentworth, Durban, to officially hand over the equipment.
The donation includes professional foldable tables and accessories, which were left behind after the Table Tennis World Cup hosted in Durban.
The equipment was donated by the People’s Republic of China as part of ongoing cooperation with South Africa.
Khawula said the initiative aims to give every learner a fair chance to take part in sport. “Each learner must have the opportunity to play at least one sport,” he said.
Mabe encouraged schools to embrace different sporting codes, noting that not all learners can play popular sports like soccer or rugby. She said table tennis helps develop focus, strategy and quick thinking.
KwaZulu-Natal is the last province to receive the equipment, marking the end of a nationwide rollout.
Officials hope the programme will promote inclusion and uncover new sporting talent in schools.
