Driver Hands Himself Over After Dangerous “No-Driver” Stunt Sparks Outrage

News

A motorist filmed performing a reckless “no-driver” stunt on a public road has handed himself over to authorities, marking a significant development in a case that previously drew widespread condemnation across KwaZulu-Natal.

The driver presented himself to the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Pinetown on Wednesday, following the circulation of a viral video showing the vehicle in motion without proper driver control. The incident, which unfolded on a public road, raised serious concerns about road safety and compliance with traffic laws.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed the development and warned motorists against engaging in dangerous behaviour. He emphasised that such stunts are illegal and place lives at risk.

Duma noted that while the driver does not consume alcohol and has shown remorse, the law must take its course. “There are harsh consequences for the growing culture of disrespect for road safety measures and traffic regulations,” he said.

The RTI has since questioned the driver and is assessing the appropriate legal action. Authorities reiterated that, under the National Road Traffic Act, drivers must maintain full control of their vehicles at all times and ensure no part of their body protrudes from a moving vehicle.

The incident follows a series of similar reckless driving cases that have alarmed officials and communities alike. Law enforcement agencies, including RTI and Operation Shanela teams, have intensified efforts to clamp down on dangerous conduct on public roads.

Motorists are urged to prioritise safety and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies.
