R4 250 Tithe Row Ends Khakhau’s Leadership Bid, Exposing Fault Lines in DA

News

In a dispute over a R4 250 monthly tithe, Karabo Khakhau has withdrawn from the Democratic Alliance (DA) federal council leadership race, laying bare tensions within the party’s internal governance.

The amount, a standard contribution expected from public representatives, became a point of contention after Khakhau missed her July payment. She maintains the lapse was an administrative oversight, quickly rectified when she paid R8 500 to cover both the outstanding and current dues.

“I don’t owe the DA a cent,” she said, describing the decision to deny her a letter of good standing as unfair and inconsistent with past precedent.

Beyond the numbers, the issue has struck a personal chord. Khakhau framed her campaign as rooted in values of fairness and accountability, shaped by her upbringing and political journey through party structures often overlooked.

Her disqualification has not only halted her leadership ambitions but also sparked broader questions about inclusivity and internal processes in the DA. Supporters see more than a missed payment — they see a young leader sidelined.

For Khakhau, however, the fight continues, even outside the race.
