Students Step Onto the Track as Science Meets Sport

News

For young chiropractic student Nandi Mthembu, the roar of the crowd at a local athletics meet will soon mean more than just excitement — it will be her classroom.

A new partnership between the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) is opening doors for students like Mthembu, blending academic learning with real-world experience. The three-year agreement will see students working directly with athletes, helping prevent injuries, support recovery, and improve performance.

“I’ve always wanted to work with athletes, but opportunities like this are rare,” Mthembu said. “Now we get to learn while making a difference.”

DUT’s Head of Chiropractic, Dr Desiree Varatharajullu, said the collaboration will expose students to a wide range of sports-related conditions, strengthening their skills and confidence. For athletes, the benefits are just as meaningful.

KZNA president Steve Mkasi believes the partnership will elevate athletics in the province by introducing a stronger scientific approach to training and recovery.

Beyond medals and competition, the initiative is also about growth — giving students practical pathways into their careers while helping athletes stay healthier and perform at their best.

For Mthembu and many others, the future now looks both promising and hands-on.
