KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev. Musa Zondi, has officially launched the Ssethembe Wheelbarrow and Equipment Manufacturing Warehouse in Mhlangane Village, Msinga, following a R2 million investment aimed at advancing rural industrialisation, supporting local entrepreneurship and creating jobs.
The facility, implemented by the uMzinyathi District Development Agency with funding from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), provides manufacturing infrastructure, equipment and essential services to support the growth of Ssethembe Services.
Speaking at the launch, MEC Zondi said the project demonstrates how targeted government investment can turn local enterprise into a driver of economic opportunity in rural communities.
“Today we are celebrating the determination of a local entrepreneur and what can be achieved when government investment meets local initiative and hard work,” said MEC Zondi.
The business, led by Mr Ntshaba, began manufacturing wheelbarrows under a tree at his homestead. Despite challenges in sourcing recycled metal drums following the COVID-19 pandemic, he adapted his operations by switching to metal sheets and continued building the enterprise.
The project has already created employment and skills development opportunities for ten young people, who have received training in cutting, moulding, welding and painting.
MEC Zondi said the facility should serve as a foundation for broader rural industrialisation, with potential to expand into other products for the agricultural, construction and gardening sectors, subject to market demand and commercial viability.
He stressed that the facility, established through public investment, must remain a public asset and be managed responsibly to support entrepreneurship and inclusive economic development in Msinga and the wider uMzinyathi District.
The MEC also called on the private sector and other stakeholders to support local businesses through mentorship, technical assistance and procurement opportunities, while encouraging greater localisation and the sourcing of goods from local producers.
“When we support viable local businesses, we help keep money circulating in our communities. We create opportunities for our people, strengthen our local economy and lay the foundation for future growth,” he said.
MEC Zondi urged the Ssethembe team to use the facility productively, grow production, access new markets and create further employment opportunities.
