Maskandi Artists Urged to Protect Their Music Rights

Maskandi artists have been urged to understand their music rights, protect their work and take their careers seriously.

This was the message at the Mpucuzeko Music Workshop, held with the South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA) at the Blue Waters Hotel on Thursday.

The workshop taught artists about music rights, royalties and opportunities in the music industry. Organisers said many artists lose out on royalties because they do not fully understand how the system works.

SAMPRA explained how musicians can register and claim money when their music is played or performed.

Mpucuzeko CEO Thabani Mthembu said the organisation was creating opportunities for Maskandi artists to perform on bigger stages.
Artists were also encouraged to use social media responsibly, promote their work and maintain a professional image.

The workshop stressed that talent alone is not enough and that understanding the business side of music is important for building a successful career.
