South African football fans could soon see Bafana Bafana star Thapelo Maseko return to competitive action after the Sebokeng-born winger emerged as a target for Danish champions FC Copenhagen.

Maseko is expected to travel to Denmark this weekend for a medical, with personal terms reportedly still to be finalised before the move can be completed.

The 26-year-old has been without a club since the 2026 FIFA World Cup and has been training on his own after his time with Mamelodi Sundowns came to an uncertain end.

Sundowns previously loaned Maseko to Cypriot club AEL Limassol, giving him an opportunity to continue his career abroad. He later faced a decision between returning to the Pretoria-based club or extending his stay in Cyprus.

However, his future at Sundowns became uncertain after he was reportedly left out of the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and told he could explore other options.

Despite the uncertainty, Maseko reminded South Africans of his ability on the international stage. He was among Bafana’s standout performers at the World Cup and scored against South Korea in a historic campaign that saw South Africa reach the last 32 for the first time.

A move to FC Copenhagen could now give the young star the fresh start he needs to rebuild his club career and return to the pitch.
