Durban, June 10, 2026 – South African authorities have intercepted 30 bricks of pure cocaine at the Port of Durban in a major operation aimed at disrupting international drug trafficking networks.
The seizure was carried out on Tuesday through a joint operation involving the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks. Officials said intelligence-led risk profiling identified a container vessel arriving from South America as a potential target for inspection.
Customs officers boarded the vessel upon arrival and inspected a container located below the waterline. During the search, they detected signs of tampering on parts of the container apparatus, prompting a more detailed examination. The inspection uncovered concealed narcotics, which were confirmed as pure cocaine using a mobile testing kit.
The operation comes just days after authorities seized approximately 90 kilograms of cocaine hidden in trucks that arrived from Brazil through the same port.
SARS Commissioner Dr Johnstone Makhubu praised the cooperation between agencies, saying the seizure demonstrated a united government response to organised crime. Hawks acting national head Lieutenant General Sphesihle Nkosi added that coordinated law enforcement efforts were proving effective in detecting and intercepting complex criminal operations.
No arrests have been announced, and investigations are continuing.
