Deputy Minister Nomusa Dube-Ncube Launches New Aircraft Maintenance Academy in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal has taken a significant step towards strengthening technical education and aviation skills development with the official launch of the WorldSkills South Africa (WSSA)-Elangeni TVET College Aircraft Maintenance Academy by Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Nomusa Dube-Ncube.The launch was marked by a ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling ceremony, symbolising the beginning of a new chapter for aviation training in the province.

The academy is a partnership between Elangeni TVET College, WorldSkills South Africa and Starlite Aviation, aimed at equipping students with practical aircraft maintenance skills, workplace experience and internationally recognised training standards.Speaking at the launch, Dube-Ncube described the initiative as an important investment in the country’s future workforce, saying partnerships between government, educational institutions and industry are essential for producing graduates who are ready to contribute to economic growth.

The academy will combine classroom learning with hands-on industry experience, ensuring students receive specialised training that meets global aviation standards while improving their employability.Stakeholders said the collaboration represents a practical model for South Africa’s skills revolution by bringing together education, innovation and industry to create opportunities for young people.Starlite Aviation will provide workplace exposure and technical expertise, while WorldSkills South Africa will ensure that training aligns with international best practices and excellence in technical education.

The new facility is expected to help address critical skills shortages in the aviation industry while strengthening South Africa’s pipeline of skilled aircraft maintenance professionals.Education leaders believe the academy will also position Elangeni TVET College as a leader in specialised technical training and demonstrate the growing role of TVET colleges in supporting the country’s economic development.The launch has been welcomed as a major boost for youth empowerment, innovation and vocational education, offering students a unique opportunity to build careers in one of the country’s most specialised industries.
