South Africa’s Banyana Banyana suffered a disappointing 5-0 defeat against Japan in an international friendly played on Saturday as preparations continue for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.Japan took control from the opening minutes, with Kiko Seike scoring twice in the first half after defensive mistakes by the South African side.

The hosts extended their advantage before halftime through Momoko Tanikawa, leaving Banyana trailing 3-0 at the break. The second half brought little improvement for the African champions as Aoba Fujino struck twice to complete a dominant performance for the Japanese team. South Africa struggled to create clear scoring opportunities against a well-organised defence.

Coach Desiree Ellis used the match to test several players ahead of the continental tournament, with some experienced stars starting on the bench.Banyana Banyana will have an opportunity to bounce back when they face Japan again on Tuesday, hoping to improve before the WAFCON tournament begins later this month.
