
Search and rescue teams have resumed operations at Hazelmere Dam following the presumed drowning of 54-year-old Umhlanga businessman Tony Govender on Friday.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), Govender, a former navy officer, disappeared while attempting to retrieve a jet-ski that had been blown away by strong winds during his birthday celebration at the dam.
RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram said witnesses reported that Govender swam towards the drifting jet-ski but went underwater and did not resurface.Emergency services, including the RUSA helicopter, have been deployed in the ongoing search.
However, strong winds, heavy rain and poor visibility forced rescuers to suspend aerial operations on Friday afternoon.Family members have remained at the dam as the search continues.Authorities have not yet recovered Govender’s body, and efforts to locate him are ongoing.
