Sasria SOC Ltd has officially launched a community recovery plan in Mpofana Municipality, aimed at rebuilding the local economy and creating job opportunities.Sasria, South Africa’s only government-owned non-life insurer covering risks such as riots, strikes, civil unrest and terrorism, visited the Mooi River area to unveil programmes targeting the Bruntville community.
Speaking at the launch, Sasria Executive Manager Shyless Shai said the initiative focuses on skills development, particularly among young people.“It is a great pleasure to launch programmes that will develop the youth of Mpofana. This area has been associated with crime, kidnapping and violence, and we are determined to restore hope—especially for young people,” said Shai. She added that a youth training programme in agriculture will help stimulate the local economy.
Sasria also donated school uniforms to six schools in the area, with learners beaming with excitement as they took to the stage to receive their much-needed attire.Umgungundlovu District Mayor Mr Mzi Zungu welcomed the initiative, saying it could help change investor perceptions of the area, which has long struggled with crime and instability.
He referenced the impact of the July 2021 unrest in South Africa, which disrupted transport and trade along the N3 and affected local businesses.Zungu revealed that investors are prepared to inject an estimated R4.5 billion into the municipality through a proposed dry port project and new factories—developments expected to boost the local economy, where more than 60% of residents are unemployed.
He also confirmed that Cedar College will provide training for youth participating in the skills development programme. One of the beneficiaries, Nqobile Khumalo, said the opportunity offers new hope. Despite holding a qualification, she has struggled to find employment.
“I’m excited about this programme because I love farming and animal husbandry. I come from a family that depends on farming, so this means a lot to me,” she said.
