Tensions flared in East London on Monday as protesters took to the streets reports of an alleged coronation of a Nigerian “Igbo king,” sparking anger among local civic groups and anti-immigration activists.
The demonstration follows a similar protest held last week in Durban.
Protesters, led by the Independent South African National Civic Organisation (ISANCO) and the March & March movement, demanded a full investigation into the controversial event. The situation escalated during the march, with reports that some protesters burned vehicles belonging to foreign nationals after a member of the group was allegedly stabbed.
ISANCO president Dr Zukile Luyenge condemned the supposed coronation as a “bogus” act and an insult to South Africa’s sovereignty, accusing authorities of failing to act. Meanwhile, March & March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma warned of growing frustration over immigration issues.
However, Ohaneze Ndigbo South Africa (ONSA) has denied that any coronation took place, stating the March 14 gathering was merely the inauguration of a community leader aimed at promoting unity, not establishing a monarchy.
Despite this clarification, protests continue, with calls for accountability intensifying.
