The authorities in KwaZulu-Natal are stepping up their road safety campaign for Easter by sending out a huge number of officers and patrol cars, with the goal of reducing road deaths by 10% during the busy holiday season.
At the start of Operation Nenzani La Ezweni in Umdloti, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma announced that more than 3,500 law enforcement officers will be placed on important routes, along with over 100 national traffic police. This operation will have officers supported by many patrol vehicles in key areas throughout the province.
The department has shared statistics showing the extent of this effort: there will be 148 roadblocks, 80 checkpoints specifically for drunk driving, and 118 operations to enforce speed limits. Additionally, 17 mobile patrol units with marked cars will keep an eye on major highways, and teams will also monitor 17 weighbridges to check heavy trucks.
The authorities are also starting 28 operations focused on pedestrian safety, which is a first for the province, with officers assigned to reduce dangerous behavior on busy streets.
Duma mentioned that the organized deployment of officers and vehicles shows a serious approach to law enforcement. “We will increase our presence on the roads to make sure everyone travels safely,” he stated.
This campaign will last until May 3, covering the busy Easter travel time
