SITHEMBISO Maduna was crowned the new KwaZulu-Natal featherweight champion after edging a gutsy Tholumusa Ngema in a thrilling contest at the Portuguese Hall in Durban on Sunday afternoon.
The bout, which had spectators on the edge of their seats, was staged under the Syathaba Boxing Promotion banner and delivered fireworks from start to finish, with Maduna doing enough to secure the judges’ nod.
The victory places Maduna in contention for a shot at the national featherweight title, currently held by Lindelani Sibisi.
In an all-female bout, Samkelo Mbambo stunned fans with a second-round knockout victory over the highly rated Nolwazi Vilakazi.
Elsewhere on the card, Siza Ngiba continued his impressive run of form, dismantling Mthonti in what proved to be a one-sided affair. The former Team KZN amateur captain produced a clinical performance, sealing a first-round technical knockout.
Bilal Johnson also bounced back from a recent defeat, outpointing Thabiso Mchunu in a solid display.
