Adriaan Wildschutt, a distance runner from South Africa, made a strong late push to win the New York City Half Marathon on Sunday, marking the biggest road win of his career.
The 27-year-old from Ceres finished the race in 59 minutes and 30 seconds after breaking away from the leading group in the final stages. Wildschutt ran conservatively in the early part of the race, saving energy while the front runners set the pace. With about three kilometres to go, he made a crucial move around the 18km point and gradually pulled ahead, leaving his competitors unable to keep up. This victory came just two weeks after Wildschutt won the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10km in 27:47, showcasing his rising dominance in road running.
After the race, Wildschutt mentioned that his plan was to make a strong final effort. “I knew if I wanted to win, I had to have the best last five kilometres,” he stated. The win took place in chilly weather, which was a stark contrast to the warm training conditions he had recently experienced in Potchefstroom.
In the women’s race, Hellen Obiri from Kenya won with a time of 1:06:33, setting a new course record ahead of Sharon Lokedi and Megan Keith. Wildschutt’s victory further emphasizes South Africa’s increasing presence in international distance running.
